Photos: Iron Dog starts at Deshka Landing in Willow

Twenty-four two-person pro class teams left Deshka Landing at Willow in a snowstorm on Sunday and will travel across 2,000 miles of Alaska wilderness on their way to Nome and a Fairbanks finish.

The start was originally to have been in Big Lake, but race organizers in January announced it was moving to Deshka Landing. Race officials said they were concerned about the stability of the ice at Big Lake following a late freeze-up and 7.0 earthquake that hit Southcentral Nov. 30.

Fans can follow race competitors via GPS tracking at irondog.org.
