Anchorage’s Will Ross wins close battle in 38.5-mile gravel bike race

Will Ross nipped Eric Flanders by 1.6 seconds Sunday to win the 5th annual Green Lake Grinder/Matt Matyas Memorial bike race, a 38.5-mile race held primarily on gravel at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Ross and Laura Fox each won the race for the third time. Fox enjoyed an 18-minute victory in the women’s competition, placing 19th overall in a field of 77 racers.

The men’s race was close, with the top five riders finishing within 18 seconds of each other. Ross led the way in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 19.2 seconds, and Flanders was right behind in 2:10:20.8. Third place went to Jamie Stull in 2:10:31.8.

Fox clocked 2:21:14.7 for her win.
