West is the favorite heading into state tennis tournament

West is looking to claim its second straight state tennis crown this weekend at the Alaska Club East.

The Eagles have top seeds in the tournament with Charlie Rush in boys singles and the team of Jack Coulter and Ethan Pickett in boys doubles. West also has Alex Sergiacomo as the second seed in boys singles, Kristina Yu and Athena Clendaniel as the second seed in girls doubles and Sophia Green as the third seed in girls singles.

If the Eagles win the state tournament it would be their sixth since 2012. The action begins at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the Alaska Club East. Championship matches are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

South has the next highest amount of seeded players with three. Carter Nelson and Steve Kilkenny are the top ranked team in mixed doubles, Gabriel Portal is the third seed in boys singles and JD Lincoln and Jack Perkins are the third seed in boys doubles.

The remaining top seeds are Emilee Groth from Chugiak in girls singles and Kate Debenham and Layna Debenham in girls doubles. The Debenham sisters are going for their their third straight state title to complete an undefeated career in high school tennis.
