One minute decides Trio in Talkeetna 40-mile fatbike race

Oliver Sternicki of Anchorage edged David Arteaga by less than a minute to win the 40-mile Trio in Talkeetna fatbike race last Saturday.

The next day, Arteaga won the 50-kilometer Tour of Anchorage fatbike race.

At the halfway point, Sternicki’s lead was a slim two seconds, but he opened up a bit of gap in the second half of the race.

Sternicki won the 8th annual race in 3 hours, 32 minutes, 57 seconds. Arteaga clocked 3:33:55. Third place went to Michael Bouwkamp (3:56:35).

In the 20-mile races, Cheryl Matyas and Paul Matyas posted decisive victories.

Cherly Matyas won the women’s race in 2:09:22, more than six minutes ahead of runnerup Kinsey Loan (2:15:47). She was third overall in a field of 52 racers who did the 20-mile race.

Paul Matyas took the men’s win in 1:52:19, more than 10 minutes ahead of second-place Christopher Jung (2:02:22).
