Hammerman Triathlon celebrates 20 years at Kincaid Park with a couple of late entries in the moose division

The Hammerman Triathlon turned 20 — with an asterisk — Saturday and celebrated with a repeat men’s champion, a new women’s champion, a fine showing from the man who won the inaugural race 21 years ago and a couple of late entries in the moose division.

Jason Lamoreaux and Kinsey Loan claimed victories in the rugged off-road triathlon at Kincaid Park, which started with a half-mile swim across chilly Little Campbell Lake.

Not long after the final swimmer left the lake, two moose swam across too.

It was the second straight victory for Lamoreaux, 42, and the first for Loan, 28.

Placing second overall was 40-year-old Mackie Derrick, who was a teenager when he won the first Hammerman Triathlon back in 2001.

This year marked the 21-year anniversary of Derrick’s triumph and the 20th running of the race. The race wasn’t held last year because of the pandemic.

Triathletes followed the swim with a 13-mile bike on single-track trails and a four-mile trail run.

Neither Lamoreaux nor Loan was the first out of the water, but both crushed it on their bikes to build big leads going into the run.

Loan clocked 1:54:59 for a three-minute win over four-time champion Amber Stull (1:58:07).

Lamoreaux finished in 1 hour, 36 minutes, 11 seconds to win by more than six minutes over Derrick (1:42:55). In 2001, on a shorter course with a 10.9-mile bike and a 3.1-mile run, Derrick won with a time of 1:23:37.

A field of 33 competed in the triathlon, five did the duathlon (which didn’t include the swim) and another 23 competed on triathlon relay teams.

The moose division drew two females that waded into the lake at the opposite end from where the race started and finished.

After eating a little, they swam to the middle of the lake and turned as if they were going to exit in the same place the swimmers did, said race director Rebecca McKee. They shifted direction slightly and came out between the dock and the course markings for the run before vanishing into the woods.
