Anchorage Wolverines lose 7-2 to Fairbanks Ice Dogs in junior hockey exhibition opener

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs beat the Anchorage Wolverines 7-2 in an exhibition game Sunday at the Royal Business Systems Ice Center. The contest was a franchise first for the Wolverines, which are an expansion team in the North American Hockey League.

The Ice Dogs, a longtime member of the NAHL, opened the scoring early in the first period on a goal by Ryan Mulrenin. Midway through the period, Anchorage’s Colton Friesen evened the score.

In the second period, Fairbanks reeled off five unanswered goals as Owen Newharth, Tyler Herzberg, Noah Griswold, Alexander Malinowski and Brendan Miles found the net.

Zachary Murray made it 7-1 in the third period before Anchorage’s Clay Allen notched the game’s final goal.

Kayden Hargrave stopped 26 shots for the visitors while Raythen Robbins turned aside 19 shots for the Wolverines.

The teams meet again at 5:07 p.m. Monday.
