Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.
This past week featured several notable individual and team performances across the Alaska sports landscape at the high school and collegiate levels. The 2024 season for high school flag and tackle football saw some dominant performances, surprising results and a state record broken. Meanwhile, several other fall sports had major meets take place in town. On the college scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Fairbanks cross country and volleyball teams produced different levels of success. Outside the state, several Alaskans had impressive performances and career achievements worth recognizing and celebrating in their respective arenas in college athletics.
Headlines and highlights
The Dimond High football team ensured that its homecoming night would not be spoiled this past Saturday by handing defending state champion West Anchorage its second defeat of the season, improving to 4-0 in the process. Beating the Eagles 29-12 ended a decade-long losing streak to the perennial contender while the Lynx established themselves as the team to beat at the Division I level.
“Each win makes us feel good and is great, but they know that we got more work to do,” Dimond head coach Brian Yim said. “We can’t discount anybody. ... The boys know that it’s not over yet. (Being) 4-0 is great but we got to get another one.”
Leading Dimond to victory was the dynamic upperclassman duo of junior Cayden Pili and senior Josiah James, who both made clutch plays on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Pili had a hand in all four of Lynx touchdowns, including a hat trick with his legs and a 16-yard scoring strike to James. James was tough to bring down on offense, recorded an interception on defense and was crowned homecoming king at halftime.
“He’s my main target and I’m just trying to get the ball in my best receiver’s hands,” Pili said. “It feels pretty good to get this win for this team.”

Across town Friday, Bartlett shut out Colony, and notched its third straight victory since narrowly losing to Dimond in the season opener. In just one half of action, senior Andre Jameson made his presence felt on both sides of the ball before exiting with an ankle injury. On offense, he exploded up the left sideline to score a 43-yard touchdown on fourth down. Defensively, he hauled in half of the team’s interception total with a pair, the second of which came after suffering his injury.
“I came in with a little bit of a sore groin, coaches allowed me to play and I just capitalized,” Jameson said. “My defense was getting pressure on the quarterback and made him throw a couple questionable balls.”
With the Golden Bears’ shutout hanging in the balance on a short field goal attempt by the Knights, junior team captain Deuce Alailefaleula stepped up on special teams to secure it. He broke through the line of scrimmage and got his hand up to successfully block the attempt. After being a disruptive force on defense all game long, Alailefaleula scored his second touchdown on offense in as many weeks on a 9-yard reception in the third quarter.
“It’s (about) how you finish the game,” Alailefaleula said. “I thank my teammates for backing me up and getting me through there. ... It felt great for a big guy like me to catch a pass like that too.”
With his team’s 57-21 rout of previously unbeaten West Valley this past Friday night, Soldotna head coach Galen Brantley Jr. set a new state record with his 160th career win, breaking the previous mark of 159 held by longtime Palmer head coach Rod Christiansen. What makes Brantley’s achievement all the more impressive is the fact that he was able to accomplish it in notably fewer seasons. Brantley has been at the helm of the Stars’ program dating back to 2008 whereas Christiansen coached the Moose for 28 seasons, from 1990-2018. Perhaps even more impressive than the record-breaking number of wins Brantley has compiled over the years is that he has yet to reach double-digit losses, with an all-time record of 160-9.
“I’m thankful to be a part of a great program with a supportive administration, dedicated assistant coaches, and hardworking parents,” Brantley said in a statement. “Most importantly I’m grateful for all of the young men who have made the commitment to play Sohi football throughout the years. They are truly the ones who make Sohi football what it is.”
In flag football action, South remains the only undefeated team in the state at 8-0 after racking up a trio of shutouts this past week in which they outscored their opponents a whopping 75-0. After blanking the four-time defending CIC champion Dimond the week prior at home, West suffered its first loss of the season this past Saturday on the road in a stunning 27-20 loss in double overtime to Dimond to fall to 6-1.
“That was a big win for us,” Dimond head coach Pete Mandel said in a statement. “Kinsey MacDonald had a fantastic game on both sides of the ball and we had several big defensive stops in key situations. We knew after our first loss to West that we were a better team than that. I feel like we played a good game in a loss on (September 5th) to South that was closer than the score indicated. Building off that momentum and coming out and scoring first against West gave us confidence that we can play with anybody. Kinsey made some great decisions in overtime that sealed the win, right after we had a couple of big pulls by Gracie Embley and Nyah O’neil.
Out on the trails, a pair of sophomores swept the top spots at the Big 8 Invitational cross-country meet this past Saturday. Service’s Miyana Kam-Magruder and Bettye Davis East’s Katahdin Staples each won individual titles at Kincaid Park, while both team titles were claimed by Chugiak in each division.
“To finally get the win, it’s amazing,” Staples said. “I never thought I’d be winning. If you’d have asked last year, my freshman self, I’d have laughed at the thought.”

On the college scene, UAA volleyball went 2-2 over the weekend at the Augustana Invitational. The Seawolves swept Northwest Missouri State in straight sets followed by back-to-back losses to South Dakota Mines and Northern State. The Seawolves ended on a high note with a win over the hosting Augustana University Vikings in four sets.
“The team did a great job refocusing for the afternoon match after a subpar performance in the morning,” UAA coach Stacie Meisner said in a statement. “We played a complete match against a good team, and that’s what we will need to continue to do next week against good teams in Fairbanks.”
Leading the offensive charge for UAA this past week was senior hitter Bethany Tuchardt, who led the team over the four contests with 35 kills followed by juniors Larssen Anderson with 33 and Tia Allen with 32.
Meanwhile, the UAF volleyball team earned GNAC Team of the Week honors after increasing its winning streak to five in a row with a quartet of victories at the Concordia University Irvine Tournament over the weekend from Thursday to Friday.
“The team really played well over the course of the weekend,” head coach Brian Scott said in a statement. “They showed a lot of growth from the previous week by cutting down the number of errors we made. Several of our matches relied on the entire team to play well, and everyone stepped up their level of play to help us get these wins. It was a great team effort this week!”
Helping lead the way for the Nanooks was senior outside hitter Karli Nielson, who became a two-time GNAC Player of the Week honoree for her offensive contributions. She recorded a GNAC-leading 64 kills over four-day event, averaging 3.76 kills per set and hitting .259. Nielson notched double-digit kills in each match, including a season-high 21 in the team’s five-set victory over Azusa Pacific.
Alaska stars shining Outside
Anchorage’s Brooke Dexter totaled 57 kills across four matches for the Simon Fraser University women’s volleyball team to open the 2024 season at the San Diego Invite over the weekend, including a single-match high of 19 in a 3-1 win over Cal State San Marcos. The former West High standout now sits at 999 career kills in 83 career matches for the Red Leafs with a chance to reach the quadruple-digit mark at the Central Washington Invitational starting this Thursday against California State Los Angeles.
Anchorage’s Deuce Zimmerman led the Western New Mexico University football team in receptions and receiving yards for the second week in a row in the Mustangs’ 46-36 win over Adams State University this past Saturday. The former East High star wideout caught six passes and finished with a season-high 119 yards.
Anchorage’s Jackson Harmon of South High fame tied his career total and set a new career single-game career high in total tackles with three solos and recorded his first career interception in Montana State University’s 41-24 win over the University of Maine on Saturday.

Harmon’s high school teammate, Jayden Heartwell, also of Anchorage, received North Star Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week honors after he scored two defensive touchdowns in the Dickinson State University football team’s 42-17 season-opening win over Rocky Mountain College last weekend. The senior defensive back of South fame took an interception 66 yards back the the other way for the first points of the game and returned a fumble 75 yards for a score.
