Buoyed by a three-game weekend sweep of their rivals, the Anchorage Bucs have created a pennant race in the Alaska Baseball League.

With less than a week remaining in the regular season, the Bucs took a seven-game winning streak into a Tuesday night game against the league-leading Mat-Su Miners.

The Miners, the league's defending champions, were 25-16 going into the game. The Bucs were 22-17. No other team in the five-team league was over .500 entering Tuesday's games.

The Bucs are two games behind the Miners with five games left, including Tuesdays. The Miners have two league games remaining, both of them against the Bucs.

As part of their late-season push, the Bucs dominated the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in three weekend games at Mulcahy Stadium. They shut out the Pilots twice, 8-0 and 4-0, and took a 3-1 win in the other game.

The final day of regular-season play is Monday.

The Fairbanks Goldpanners will make a rare Southcentral Alaska appearance this week when they play nonleague games at Chugiak on Thursday and Mat-Su on Friday.
