The Alaska Baseball League will be in full swing this weekend at Mulcahy Stadium, and some Major League baseball scouts will be on hand to watch.

All five teams will be in action Friday and Saturday at the annual Scout Showcase, and Sunday the league’s heavy hitters will battle in a home run derby, followed by an all-star game.

After that, just two weeks remain in the regular season.

Tripleheaders are set for Friday and Saturday, with the first game starting at 1 p.m. each day. Watching from the stands will be a number of MLB scouts.

Through Wednesday’s games, Blake Paugh, an outfielder from the University of Arizona, has an ABL-best seven home runs for the league-leading Anchorage Bucs.

The Mat-Su Miners, who trailed the Bucs by two games through Wednesday’s games, boast two of the ABL’s top pitchers in Randy Abshier and Jacob McNairy and one of its top hitters in Erik Webb.

Abshier, a lefthander from the University of Arizona, owns a .166 earned-run average and has a league-high 35 strikeouts in 37.1 innings. McNairy, a righthander from the University of Alabama, has a league-high seven saves and a 0.69 ERA.

Webb, an outfielder from Central Missouri, is batting an ABL-best .362 with a league-high 24 RBIs. He’s also stolen 10 bases.

All-star rosters will be selected Friday, according to Chugiak Chinooks general manager Chris Beck.
