Boys basketball: West fends off Kodiak 56-48

The West High boys basketball team prevailed 56-48 in a nonconference game against the Kodiak Bears on Thursday, using a strong second quarter to pull away.

Da'Zhon Wyche led West to the home-court victory with 18 points and eight steals. Joey Barranco chipped in 14 points and Sean Duffy added eight points and eight rebounds for the Eagles.

Kodiak's Augie Cauging scored six points to help the Bears take a 17-12 lead in the first quarter. But West took control in the second quarter, outscoring Kodiak 14-2 to go into halftime with a 26-19 advantage.

Barranco contributed six points in the third quarter, keeping West on top 42-31.

Barranco struck for his third trey to give West its biggest lead of the game 50-36, and the Eagles held a double-digit lead for long stretches in the fourth quarter.
