Local girls softball team dominates again at Little League Junior Western Regional

Mercy, the combined team from Nunaka Valley, City View and Polar Little Leagues is rolling early in the Junior Softball Western Regional in Tucson, Arizona.

The Alaskans on Saturday night duplicated their opening-game feat by dispatching their opponent in fewer than the scheduled seven innings.

They beat Auburn, Washington, 13-1, in five innings, two nights after racking a 14-1 win over Tillamook, Oregon, in six innings.

The Alaskans not only remained perfect in the nine-team, double-elimination tournament, but earned themselves some rest. They next play Wednesday.

Coach Jeff Boeckman said pitcher Rebecca Syrup took command after giving up one run in the first inning. She received ample offensive support -- Daisy Page went 4 for 4 and drove in two runs, Tala Lauvale banged a three-run home run, and Eva Damrill, Kenzie Barnhart and Billie-Jean Koso each went 1 for 1.

The Alaskans blew open the game with a seven-run third inning, backed that up with another run in the fourth and plated five more in the fifth, all of which invoked the 10-run mercy rule after five innings.
