Shack attack: brothers boosting deep South team at CIC wrestling tournament

The phrase "let the play do the talking" doesn't ring truer than it does with South wrestling's Shack brothers.

Greg and Jacob Shack find themselves in the Cook Inlet Conference wrestling finals heading into Saturday at Chugiak, but you wouldn't learn that from talking to the soft-spoken brothers.

"They leave it all in the practice room, they leave it all on the mat," South coach Darin Pestrikoff said. "They let their actions speak for them."

The sibling duo headlines a South team that leads the CIC tournament after Friday with a score of 362.0. Chugiak, the tournament host, sits in second with 125.0.

Greg, a senior, is seeking to win his fourth straight CIC championship. He faces East's Brenan Powell in the 132-pound finals.

Jacob, a freshman, will compete in his first CIC finals. He goes up against teammate Scott Harris at 120.

Greg is also undefeated on the season at 39-0. He kept his unbeaten streak alive with three straight pins Friday on his way to the finals. He beat his first two opponents in under a minute before taking 2:55 to subdue Bartlett's Jamie Green in the semifinals.

Jacob, who has lost only three times this season, said he has enjoyed competing with his brother this year.

"It's pretty cool," Jacob said. "I've learned a lot from him. He's pretty good, so I look up to him in wrestling."

The Shack brothers started wrestling at a young age. Greg said he started wrestling when he was 4 years old — years before he'd be old enough to hit the mat as a competitor.

"Those guys have been wrestling since they were really young," Pestrikoff said. "Their dad got them into wrestling when they were tiny and they've just stuck with it. They've always pushed themselves."

Greg said his years of experience as a wrestler allow him to stay calm when he hits the mat, and he goes on autopilot.

Now, he hopes to help navigate the Wolverines to their ninth CIC title since South was established in 2004.

South leads the field with 12 wrestlers in the finals. The Cougars are trailed by East with four, Bartlett with three, Service, Chugiak, Dimond and Eagle River with two and West with one.

The CIC tournament continues at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Chugiak, where the team and individual champions will be crowned.
