Dimond takes down rival South to win 20-team volleyball tournament

The Dimond Lynx took down rival South twice on Saturday to claim the championship at the Service-Dimond volleyball tournament.

In both matches, Dimond battled back from first-set losses.

Early in the day, Dimond beat South 20-25, 30-28, 15-13 to send the Wolverines into the loser's bracket.

South fought back with wins over Lathrop, Wasilla and East to earn another shot at Dimond in the title match. But the Lynx again prevailed, 16-25, 25-19, 15-13.

"South is a great team," Dimond coach Kim Lauwers said. "I'm just really proud of my team for pulling together."

Brynn Sulte, Dimond's 6-foot-2 middle blocker, was named the MVP of the 20-team tournament. In the championship match, she delivered seven kills and three blocks.

Alissa Pili added seven kills and 14 digs for Dimond. Other top contributors included Teuila Lolotai (20 assists, 8 digs), Mia Ekstrand (6 kills) and Madeleine Laporte (5 kills).

Teams have one more week of regular-season play before heading into conference tournaments. Dimond, South and East will be among the favorites when the Cook Inlet Conference tournament begins Nov. 1.
