Annie VanderWiede sank nine of 10 free throw attempts to spark Grace Christian's 44-33 win over the Glennallen girls in Thursday's first round of the Grace Grizzly Classic basketball tournament.
The Grizzlies outscored Glennallen 12-1 at the foul line, where Grace Christian shot 20 free throws to Glennallen's four.
Nine of Grace's free throws came in the second half, when the Grizzlies outscored the Panthers 24-14 to pull away after a close first half.
VanderWiede finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Grizzlies. Teammate Makenna Shamburger took scoring honors with 18 points and added four rebounds and three assists.
Gloria Jacobsen's 11 points and Tamara Jones' eight points and 11 rebounds led Glennallen.
In other tournament games, both of Bethel's teams picked up first-round wins over Galena. The boys triumphed 51-31 and the girls won 47-35.
In Thursday's late game, the Grace Christian boys battled Glennallen.
The four-team, round-robin tournament continues Friday and wraps up Saturday.
