Prep basketball: Dimond, Chugiak girls snag third-place finishes in Las Vegas

A pair of Cook Inlet Conference girls basketball teams took third-place in their respective brackets at the Gator Winter Classic in Las Vegas on Friday.

Dimond defeated Lawndale High (California) 73-50 to finish third in the Diamond bracket and Chugiak downed Orosi (California) 74-32 in the Gold bracket third-place game.

Dimond, which fell to Downey (California) in the semifinals, received a whopping 29 points and 20 rebounds from sophomore Alissa Pili in the third-place game. Maya Carle (13 points) and Jahnna Hajdukovich (17) also contributed.

Chugiak was led by Chasity Seldon (21 points), Eva Palmer (11) and Nicole Pinkney (11 assists) in its blowout win over Orosi. The Mustangs fell to eventual tournament champion Santa Margarita (California) in the semifinals.

Pili and Seldon were selected to the all-tournament team.

In other action, the Dimond boys defeated Juneau 61-48 in the championship at the Capital City Classic in Juneau. No individual stats were provided.

West girls fall to California team

The West Eagles were no match for a California team Friday at the Clark Cochrane Christmas Classic girls basketball tournament in Ketchikan.

The Esperanza Aztecs of Esperanza, California, throttled West 75-29. Nyedol Thor led the Eagles with 12 points.
