Chugiak girls ride upsets to No. 1 ranking in basketball poll

Fueled by wins last week over powerhouses Wasilla and Dimond, the Chugiak Mustangs girls basketball team vaulted into the top spot in this week's Class 4A basketball poll.

Chugiak's ascension came in the wake of their championship run in the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout at Dimond High, where the Mustangs knocked off the Warriors and the Lynx.

Chugiak was ranked fourth in last week's poll.

In the Class 4A boys poll, Dimond and East swapped places. Dimond, ranked second a week ago, replaced East as the top-ranked team. East, which didn't lose a game between the two polls, slipped to the No. 2 spot.

Voters from the Alaska Association of Basketball Coach should have little trouble deciding which team should rank higher in the next poll — East and Dimond play Thursday night at Dimond High.
