Chugiak, Dimond to play for CIC girls basketball title

Dimond and Chugiak claimed trips to next week's state tournament and spots in Saturday's Cook Inlet Conference girls basketball championship game by winning semifinal games Friday at West High.

Alisa Pili racked up 35 points to carry top-seeded Dimond past West 86-53, and third-seeded Chugiak upset second-seeded East 54-48.

The Lynx and the Mustangs will play for the CIC title at 5:15 p.m. Saturday at West. East and West will meet in the third-place game at 1:45 p.m.

Chugiak trailed East 14-10 after the first quarter, but took a 29-24 lead by halftime and held on for the win.

Nicole Pinckney paced the Mustangs with 10 of her 17 points coming in the second half. Randi McMullen added 12 and Chasity Horn tallied 10 for Chugiak.

Tennae Voliva (15 points) and Kaylonee Thompson (10) boosted East.

In the late semifinal, Pili had 25 of Dimond's 37 first-half points, helping the Lynx to a seven-point halftime lead.

Dimond pulled away with a 32-13 third quarter that included 10 points from Angelline Nageak and six each from Pili and Jahnna Hajdukovich. Nageak finished with 11 points and Hajdukovich had 15.

Nene John and Donninaya each netted 14 points for West.

Grace knocks off Nikiski 

Grace Christian held Nikiski to two points in the fourth quarter in its 33-27 girls basketball victory in the Southcentral Conference semifinals.

Annie VanderWeide supplied 11 points for the Grizzlies, who held all Bulldogs scorers to single digits.

Emma Wik and Bethany Carstens led Nikiski with six points apiece. Makenna Shamburger added nine for Grace.
