Huckabay's 42 points puts East boys in CIC title game against Dimond

Trey Huckabay poured in 42 points Friday to carry the East Thunderbirds to an 89-59 boys basketball win over Service in a Cook Inlet Conference semifinal game.

The T-birds will face top-seeded Dimond in Saturday's 7:30 p.m. title game at West high. The Lynx advanced with an easy 60-28 win over West.

The victories qualified both winners for next week's Class 4A state tournament at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Huckabay was hot from the start, pumping in 23 points in the first quarter to boost the T-birds to a huge 28-5 lead.

The 6-foot-1 senior guard drilled 10 3-pointers, five in the first quarter and seven in the first two quarters.

Huckabay was joined in double figures by teammates Kaeleb Johnson (14 points), Moses Miller (12) and Aiden Williams (11).

Nathan Fromm led Service with 25 points. Dominik Norman added 15 and Fadel Harvin had 11.

Though Huckabay's 42 points are the most scored by an Anchorage boy this season, they aren't a single-season scoring record. Steve Paige of West scored 55 in a 1972 game, and Da'Zhon Wyche of West scored 49 in a game last season.

The Alaska single-game scoring record for boys is 74 points by Tok's Skylar Webb in 2009.

In Dimond's romp over West, a balanced attack powered the Lynx. Kylan Osborne scored a game-high 12 points and three teammates — Nicolas Horning, Dylan Tufaga and Eric Jenkins — all scored 10.

Dimond led 11-6 after the first quarter but held the Eagles to a single field goal in the second quarter to grab a 28-11 halftime lead.

Joey Barrano's six points paced West.

Service and West will play in the third-place game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at West.
