1A girls: Scammon Bay opens defense of title with win over Ninilchik

Scammon Bay took a big step toward defending its Class 1A girls basketball championship Thursday by claiming a first-round win over Ninilchik at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Eagles will be joined in Friday's semifinals by the Buckland Belugas, the King Cove Rookies and the Selawik Wolves.

Ninilchik limited Scammon Bay's Kiah Charles, the Class 1A Player of the Year, to four points, but the Eagles found plenty of firepower elsewhere to take a 43-26 victory.

Eight players contributed points, including Robyn Hunter (8 points) and Misty Sundown (7). Charles chipped in five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Scammon Bay's 17 steals disrupted the Wolverines, who were led by DeeAnn White's 13 points.

In other first-round games:

Buckland 59, Klawock 25: Buckland held Klawock to a single field goal in the first half to grab a 41-4 halftime lead.

Sarah Washington furnished a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and was one of six Buckland players with six or more points.

Taya Marvin's 19 points and 13 rebounds sparked Klawock.

King Cove 67, Nikolaevsk 41: Elaina Mack and McKenna Gould each tossed in 20 points for King Cove, which raced to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter.

Leading the way for Nikalaevsk were Elizabeth Fefelov with 11 points and Vera Fefelov with 10.

Selawik 66, Aniak 57: Selawik stormed back from a first-half deficit to pull out the victory. Down by four at the half, the Wolves outscored Aniak 41-28 in the second half.

Shaylynn Hingsbergen scored a game-high 25 points and sister Marjorie Hingsbergen added 18 points for Selawik.

The Halfbreeds got a boost from Shauna Koonuk's 24 points and Kayla Morgan's 17.
