Scammon Bay took a big step toward defending its Class 1A girls basketball championship Thursday by claiming a first-round win over Ninilchik at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Eagles will be joined in Friday's semifinals by the Buckland Belugas, the King Cove Rookies and the Selawik Wolves.
Ninilchik limited Scammon Bay's Kiah Charles, the Class 1A Player of the Year, to four points, but the Eagles found plenty of firepower elsewhere to take a 43-26 victory.
Eight players contributed points, including Robyn Hunter (8 points) and Misty Sundown (7). Charles chipped in five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Scammon Bay's 17 steals disrupted the Wolverines, who were led by DeeAnn White's 13 points.
