Dimond, West claim state softball tourney berths

Dimond secured its first state softball tournament berth in six years Thursday by beating Chugiak 10-4 in the Cook Inlet Conference tournament at Albrecht Fields.

Joining the Lynx at next week's state tournament in Fairbanks will be West, a 5-2 winner over Service.

Dimond and West advanced during loser-out play in the tournament, which continues through Saturday.

Dimond is headed to state for the first time since 2011 thanks to big games from Mikeala Lawrence and Katie Hanson.

Lawrence was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs. Hanson pitched all seven innings, striking out six and allowing two earned runs. Savanna Wallace added three RBIs on two hits for the Lynx.

In Thursday's early loser-out games, Chugiak and West stayed alive with wins over Bartlett and Eagle River, respectively. Chugiak trounced Bartlett 12-1, and West nipped Eagle River 8-7.

South and East — which qualified for state with victories Thursday — will meet Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a winner's bracket game.
