Defending champion South stayed undefeated with a pair of pool-play wins Thursday at the state softball tournament in Fairbanks.
The Wolverines defeated West Valley 4-1 and Dimond 8-4 to earn a bye in the first round of Friday's bracket play at South Davis Park.
East earned the other bye, defeating Wasilla 10-2 and West 12-1.
In the small-school tournament, defending champion Thunder Mountain also earned a pair of victories, defeating Hutchison 11-6 and Soldotna 18-7. Juneau, last year's runnerup, also went 2-0 Thursday.
