Bartlett, Dimond girls; West boys start strong in early season hoops tourneys

It's the time of year for early season basketball tournaments and several Anchorage teams are playing in tourneys around the state and around the country.

The Bartlett girls team started 2-0 in the Haynes Academy Invitational in Metairie, Louisiana, dispatching host team Haynes Academy 59-30 on Wednesday and De La Salle (Louisiana) 65-25 on Thursday.

Freshman Amelia Uhila led Bartlett in both games with 15 points Thursday and 12 points Wednesday. Senior Paia Togagae added 14 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double in Thursday's win. All nine Bartlett players scored Wednesday.

The West boys team tipped off the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic with a 75-44 win over Thunder Mountain in Ketchikan.

Ayayol Dak (16 points), Deandre McMorris (15) and Amari Lawrence (13) powered the Eagles.

The Eagle River boys are 1-1 at the Cactus Jam in Phoenix.

The Wolves held of Liberty (Oregon) 62-53 on Wednesday before falling to Maranatha Christian (California) in a heartbreaker, 54-52 on Thursday. Ryan Adkins fueled Eagle River with 24 points in the Wednesday win and Aaron Davis led the team with 11 on Thursday.

In another tournament, the Dimond girls started 2-0 in the West Coast Jamboree in Concord, California, with an 82-55 win over Castro Valley (California) and an 86-48 win over Vanden (California). Castro Valley was previously unbeaten at 8-0.

No stats were reported for Dimond.
