Dimond downs Whalers in Alaska Prep Shootout championship game

Led by tournament MVP Nicolas Horning's 17 points and 11 rebounds, the Dimond Lynx captured the championship at their own Alaska Prep Shootout on Saturday night.

The Lynx edged the Barrow Whalers 49-44 in the championship game of the eight-team tournament at Dimond High.

Carter Moore chalked up 11 points and seven assists and Evan Hoosier had 14 points for Dimond, which outrebounded the Whalers 27-17 and outscored them at the free throw line 11-1.

Barrow was powered by Brendon Matthews, who sank four 3-pointers en route to 14 points, and Travis Adams, who added 13 points and six assists.

In other games Saturday, Chugiak held off Grace Christian 45-43 to take third place, Juneau got a buzzer-beating bucket from Luke Mallinger to beat Soldotna 48-47 in the fourth-place game, and Mt. Edgecumbe walloped Point Hope 89-59 for seventh place.

Jersey Truesdell was the day's leading scorer with 29 points for Soldotna.

Chugiak used Adam Huffman's 12 points and Derryk Snell's 10 points and three steals to prevail over the Grizzlies and their star senior guard, Tobin Karlberg, who racked up 20 points and five steals.

Both Karlberg and Adams are headed to UAA next season to play for the Seawolves.
