South, East to battle for softball supremacy

This weekend could go a long way in determining the top softball team in the Cook Inlet Conference softball standings.

Or it could leave things the way they are now, with the league's two powerhouses knotted for first place.

South and East, the CIC's only undefeated teams, will tangle twice in the span of about 14 hours this weekend. They play Friday at 7:45 p.m. and again Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

A sweep by either team would establish a conference favorite with two weeks remaining before the May 21-26 CIC tournament. A split would leave the teams tied for first place.

South is 6-0 in conference play and batting .521 as a team. Makenzie Moore boasts a team-high batting average of .706 (12 of 17) and Karsyn Decker leads the team in hits (13) and steals (12) and ranks second in runs (12).

East is 7-0 against CIC teams after a dominating doubleheader sweep Wednesday, when the T-birds buried Service 17-4 and Chugiak 9-0. In the Chugiak win, East's Daisy Page pitched a perfect five-inning game, striking out nine of the 15 batters she faced.
