Lynx are spectacular at the West Spiketacular volleyball tournament

The Dimond Lynx volleyball team steamrolled the competition to capture the West Spiketacular championship Saturday night at West High.

The defending state champs were perfect in Friday's pool play and didn't drop a set in Saturday's bracket play at the 17-team tournament.

The Lynx defeated South 25-21, 25-23 in the championship match to complete their undefeated run. It was their closest match of the tournament.

Dimond played 17 sets over two days and held opponents to fewer than 20 points in all but three. Besides South in the title match, Wasilla surpassed 20 points in a 25-21 pool-play loss to the Lynx on Friday.

The Lynx racked up a 425-234 scoring advantage over two days of play. They had a 175-101 edge in points while cruising to a 7-0 pool-play record and a 250-133 edge while going 5-0 in bracket play. Teams played a single set in pool play and best-of-three matches in bracket play.

South went 6-1 in pool play and won its first match Saturday before stumbling  against West and dropping into the losers bracket. The Wolverines won five straight elimination matches, capping the run with a 28-26, 25-15 win over Bartlett, to advance to the championship match.

Danae Stokes represented Dimond on the all-tournament team, which honored one player from each team plus a Most Valuable Player. West's Brooke Dexter earned the MVP award.
