ACS runner Merchant blazes to Region III championship

Tristian Merchant of Anchorage Christian smoked the competition Saturday at the Region III Cross-Country Championships on the Kenai Peninsula.

He blazed to a time of 15 minutes, 46.1 seconds, on the 5-kilometer Tsalteshi Trails course.

Merchant's performance came in the Division II boys race, where he posted a 45-second victory over Grace Christian's Gabe Morton. His time was significantly faster than the winning time in the Division I race, where Colony's Lane Meier won in 16:30.5.

Claiming victories in the girls races were Palmer's Katey Houser (18:47 in the Division I race) and Kenai Central's Jaycie Calvert (19:22.3 in the Division II race).
