Service boys capture first state swim crown since 1996

The Service boys are back. The Dimond girls never left.

Service won its first boys state swimming title since 1996 and Dimond claimed its fourth straight girls championship Saturday at the state swimming and diving championships at the Bartlett High pool.

Caleb Law and Brian Jarupakorn were the driving forces behind a deep, powerful Cougars squad that broke two state records.

Law won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races and swam on Service's record-breaking 200-yard individual medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams. Jarupakorn won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and also swam in both relays.

Service's title was its ninth overall, but the closest the Cougars had come to a championship in recent years was back-to-back third-place showings in 2013-14.

The Cougars outdistanced rival Dimond by 15 points. Kodiak was third.

Eagle River's John Heaphy was also a double winner in the boys competition with victories in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

In the girls competition, Dimond beat Sitka by 24 points for its ninth state championship. Eagle River claimed third place.

The Lynx had a double winner in Breckynn Willis (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly). Willis also teamed with Brooke Dittlinger, Emi Soldwedel and Dreamer Kowatch to win the 200 freestyle relay and with Kowatch, Soldwedel and Mikayla Terry to win the 400 freestyle relay. Kowatch, Willis's younger sister, won the 500 freestyle.

Seward's Lydia Jacoby made one of the meet's biggest splashes by breaking the state record in the 100 breaststroke two days in a row. On Friday, she clocked 1:03.68 to shatter the previous mark of 1:04.50 set by Kodiak's Laura Griffing in 2010. On Saturday, she lowered her own record with a time of 1:03.11.

Jacoby also won the 200 individual medley.

Chugiak's Izzy Powers won twice in her final high school meet, claiming victory in both the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
