West’s Aubrey Leclair and Service’s Eli Hermanson were the fastest skiers Saturday at chilly Chugiak High, where the opening nordic ski race of the season was held in temperatures that hovered around zero.

Leclair finished the 6.8-kilometer girls interval-start classic race in 20 minutes, 30.4 seconds to win for the second straight year. Service’s Garvee Tobin was second in 20:56.2.

The boys 9.6-kilometer classic race was much closer, with Hermanson edging West’s Maxime Germain by 3.6 second. Chugiak’s Miles Dennis, the 2018 winner, finished third, nearly 40 seconds behind Germain.

In the team standings, the Service boys edged West Valley and the West girls beat Service.

The high school season was delayed by poor early season snow conditions and the Nov. 30 earthquake.
