A balanced scoring effort and an abundance of free throws fueled West’s 44-37 victory over the Bartlett Golden Bears on Tuesday, extending the Eagles' winning streak to six and improving their record to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in Cook Inlet Conference play.
The victory came despite a knee injury to all-conference senior Azaria Robinson, who went down about five minutes into the game and was taken off the Bartlett High court in a wheelchair.
“I don’t think it’s super serious,” West coach Stanley Engel said.
Senior Nyeniea John led the Eagles charge with 11 points and junior Ah’Kayzee Galloway-Davis pitched in 10.
Despite numerous turnovers, West maintained a two possession lead most of the game, thanks in part to tenacious rebounding from Galloway-Davis, whose efforts on the offensive end extended several West possessions.
The Eagles sank 13 of their 20 free throw attempts. Bartlett was 7 of 12.
Sophomore Amelia Uhila breathed life into the Golden Bears in the final two minutes but West iced the game with two free throws and a layup.
Freshman Nyakuot Ruot led Bartlett with 10 points and Uhila added nine.
Bartlett won the boys game, 74-57.
