Alissa Pili racked up 38 points Thursday night to help the Dimond Lynx sneak past Soldotna 56-49 at the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout girls basketball tournament at Dimond High.
Dimond, the reigning Class 4A state champs, outscored Soldotna 12-7 in the fourth quarter to get the win. Pili scored nine points, five from the foul line, in the decisive quarter.
Aliann Schmidt’s 14 points sparked Soldotna.
The Lynx were among two defending state champs that advanced to the semifinals in the Gold bracket of the 16-team tournament.
The defending Class 3A state champion ACS Lions trounced 4A powerhouse Wasilla 66-35 behind Jordan Todd’s 13 points. Three players contributed eight points apiece for ACS.
Wasilla played without senior standout Olivia Davies, who was sidelined due to injury. Senior Diondra Lawhead led the Warriors with eight points.
In other first-round action in the tournament’s Gold bracket, Chugiak surprised West 56-46 and Bartlett crushed West Valley 59-38.
Junior Chasity Selden poured in a game-high 16 points for the Mustangs, who avenged a January loss to West. Junior Gillian Huss led the Eagles with 13 points.
Bartlett used a big second quarter to rally past West Valley. The Golden Bears trailed 14-13 after one quarter but limited West Valley to five points in the second quarter to grab a 32-19 halftime lead.
Sophomore Amelia Uhila hit four 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 18 points.
The eight teams in the Gold championship bracket all won games on the tournament’s first day of action on Wednesday. The losers of those games dropped into the Maroon consolation bracket, where Thursday’s action was highlighted by South’s 61-59 triple-overtime win over Thunder Mountain.
Play continues Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, the Maroon championship game is set to tip off at 2 p.m. The Gold bracket championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
