Classes ended for the school year Wednesday, but the work isn’t over yet for scores of Alaska high school athletes.

State championships are at stake this week in soccer and track and field.

The state soccer championships begin Thursday with a busy day in Anchorage — 16 matches at three locations. On Saturday at Service High, four champions will be crowned (Division I boys and girls, Division II boys and girls).

At Machetanz Field in Palmer, the state track and field championships will be held Friday and Saturday.

Several field events will be contested Friday beginning at 9 a.m. The big event on the track that day is the 3,200 meters, with the first of the four finals (Division I boys and girls, Division II boys and girls) beginning at 11 a.m. The rest of the track finals are Saturday.

There’s also action on the diamond this weekend. The Cook Inlet Conference softball championships, a double-elimination tournament that began Wednesday, runs through Saturday at Albrecht Fields. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, with an if-necessary game at 4 p.m.

Chugiak, West, Eagle River and South are playing in a round-robin series of baseball games that began Saturday and continue Wednesday and Thursday. The top two teams after the CIC playoff series will advance to the state tournament May 30-June 1 at Mulcahy Stadium.
