Cross-country season opens with tight race between ACS’s Merchant and Dimond’s Prosser

Tristian Merchant of Anchorage Christian outdueled Sonny Prosser of Dimond to go home a winner on the first day of high school cross-country season Friday.

Merchant, the Division 2 defending state champion, beat Prosser by three seconds in the 3-kilometer race at the South Side Quad Meet at Kincaid Park.

In the girls race, defending Cook Inlet Conference champion Ava Earl of South High breezed to a 15-second win over teammate Robyn Miller.

Chugiak-Eagle River dual meet

Hyrum Nelson of Chugiak and Emily Walsh of Eagle River cruised to victories Friday at the Beach Lake Trails in Chugiak.

Nelson was the only runner to break 10 minutes and Walsh was the only girl with a sub-12:00 time in the 3-kilometer race.

The Chugiak boys produced the top four finishers in the 3-kilometer race to beat Eagle River 17-44, and the Eagle River girls placed four in the top five to take down Chugiak 20-36.

The West Eagles swept the team titles at the North Side Tri Meet at Alaska Pacific University.

West’s Payton Smith won the 3K girls race by 27 seconds and East’s Luke Howe won the 3K boys race by 10 seconds.
