Service’s Alexander Maurer and South’s Ava Earl captured the individual wins and led their teams to victory Saturday at the Mustang Smokin’ Stapede in Chugiak.

The meet was put together late in the week after smoke from wildfires forced the cancellation of the Tsalteshi Invitational in Soldotna. More than 450 high school runners competed, including students from Unalaska.

Mauerer won the boys 5-kilometer race by beating Chugiak’s Hyrum Nelson by nine seconds. Three other Service runners placed in the top 10 to propel the Cougars to the team victory with a 26-point margin over Chugiak.

Earl, the defending Cook Inlet Conference champion, won the girls race by 18 seconds over Eagle River’s Emily Walsh. Robyn Miller turned in a fourth-place finish for the Wolverines, who edged Service by 15 points for the team title.
