Top seeds prevail in first round of CIC volleyball tournament

The top four seeds triumphed Tuesday during the first round of the Cook Inlet Conference volleyball tournament.

South, Dimond and Bartlett all scored sweeps, and the third-seeded East Thunderbirds got past sixth-seeded Chugiak in four sets.

The winners don’t play again until Thursday. The losers face elimination Wednesday. All remaining action is at Service High.

In first-round games Tuesday at South High, the top-seeded South Wolverines downed eighth-seeded Eagle River 25-18, 25-13, 25-17, and the fourth-seeded Bartlett Golden Bears tripped fifth-seeded West 25-23, 25-19, 25-17.

At Dimond High, the second-seeded Dimond Lynx defeated seventh-seeded Service 25-19, 25-16, 25-9, and East beat Chugiak 25-7, 14-25, 25-20, 25-20.

The tournament continues through Saturday. The top three teams will advance to next week’s state tournament.

East 3, Chugiak 1 (25-7, 14-25, 25-20, 25-20)

Wednesday’s matches at Service High

5:30 p.m. — West vs. Eagle River

7:30 p.m. — Service vs. Chugiak

Thursday’s match at Service High

5:30 p.m. — Dimond vs. East

7:30 p.m. — South vs. Bartlett
