Conditions were marginal, but that didn’t deter a couple of hundred high school skiers who made the most out of a little bit of snow at Kincaid Park on Saturday.

Kendall Kramer of West Valley and Michael Earnhart of Chugiak took home the individual victories at the annual Lynxloppet cross-country race.

Scheduled to be a 10-kilometer race, it was instead a 3.6-kilometer classic-technique event due to wind and warm weather that wiped out much of the park’s snow supply Monday. Skiers competed on a short loop, which in the stadium area consisted of a thin ribbon of snow surrounded by ice.

Kramer, the nation’s top junior girl and a member of the U.S. Ski Team’s D team, won the girls race by 20 seconds over Chugiak’s Adrianna Proffitt. She finished in 9 minutes, 44.8 seconds, a time that would have placed her 18th in the boys race.

Earnhart won the boys race in 8:39.4, more than six seconds ahead of Alexander Maurer of Service.

Official team scores weren’t available Saturday evening, but the Service Cougars swept the team titles. West finished second in the girls competition and Chugiak was second in the boys competition.
