Service’s Alexander Maurer and Eagle River’s Emily Walsh rule the trails at Kincaid Park

The action came fast and furious during the second week of the Cook Inlet Conference cross-country running season, and no one was faster than Service’s Alexander Maurer.

Maurer broke the 16-minute mark for the second straight week at Kincaid Park, completing the 5-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 55 seconds. He had the fastest time among runners from all eight schools.

Competition was divided into one dual meet and two three-team meets. Runners left the start line two at a time, with 10 seconds separating each pair.

Maurer ran in the final race of the day and started side-by-side with Chugiak’s Michael Earnhart, who also finished in less than 16 minutes last week.

The friendly rivalry produced a time of 16:15 from Earnhart, who was the only runner other than Maurer to finish in less than 17 minutes.

The fastest girls time of the day came from Emily Walsh of Eagle River, who ran 19:19 in the second meet, a dual between the Wolves and West High.

The West boys grabbed the first four spots in that meet, an effort led by Isaac Main in 17:40.

In the day’s first meet, Dimond runners Jared Gardiner and Delainey Zock set the pace in a three-team meet with South and Bartlett. Gardiner won the boys race by 12 seconds in 17:35, and Zock’s time of 19:29 gave her a 14-second win in the girls race.

The competitions drew a couple of hundred high school runners who competed in varsity, junior varsity and open meets.

In the West-Eagle River dual meet, some of the runners in the JV boys race were delayed by about a minute by a moose. Last week, one of the varsity boys races was restarted so officials could clear the trail of a stubborn bull moose.
