South hockey team breezes past Service to claim spot in CIC championship game

The South Wolverines secured a spot in the championship game of the Cook Inlet Conference by breezing past the Service Cougars 8-2 in a semifinal game Wednesday at Ben Boeke Ice Arena.

The win puts South in Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. championship game. The second-seeded Wolverines will play the winner of Thursday’s semifinal game between Dimond and Eagle River.

Gavin Fox and Bryston Monrean scored two goals apiece and goalie Edward Makar stopped 34 shots to spark the Wolverines.

Fox scored both of his goals in the first period to boost South to a 4-0 lead. Both of Monrean’s goals came in the second period, when South stretched its lead to 7-1.

Other Wolverines goals came from Dylan Evans, Colin Hedland, Colten Gerken and Reed Donald.

Third-seeded Service got 19 saves from Aidan Efird and goals from Jaden Hope and Wyatt Hickok.
