The Wasilla Warriors’ extended reign in high school baseball is over.
The South Wolverines walloped Wasilla 10-0 Thursday in the opening round of the high school baseball championships at Mulcahy Stadium, ending Wasilla’s hopes of repeating as state champs.
The Warriors won the 2019 state tournament, and with no tournament last year because of COVID-19, their reign as state champs lasted nearly two years.
South dispatched them with stingy pitching and plentiful hitting to join Juneau, Colony and Eagle River in Friday’s semifinals.
Three Wolverines pitchers combined for a one-hitter against Wasilla, an effort that began with four hitless innings from starter Isaac Johnson. Reece Ivanoff and Luke Ivanoff pitched the final two innings, with Reece Ivanoff allowing Wasilla’s lone hit. The trio combined for four strikeouts and two walks.
At the plate, South piled up 12 hits. Maddux Soland was 3-for-4 to lead the way.
In other games:
-- Colony pitcher Evan Walker struck out seven and allowed two hits in a 6-2 complete-game victory over Chugiak.
-- Juneau ace Garrett Bryant struck out eight and limited Dimond to two hits in six innings to lead the Crimson Bears to a 3-0 shutout and spoil an eight-strikeout game by Garrett Lick. Juneau’s Kai Scmmidt drove in a run and struck out one in a final-inning relief appearance.
-- Josh Thompson scored three times and Cam Witte and Connor Lanehart each drove in two runs to spark Eagle River’s 12-1 win over Sitka.
In the Division II state tournament at Wasilla High, North Pole, Kodiak, Palmer and Soldotna posted first-round wins to advance to Friday’s semifinals.
Championship games in both tournaments are slated for 3 p.m. Saturday.
