Runners from West Valley and Chugiak take home individual wins at Palmer Invitational

Daniel Abramowicz from West Valley and Campbell Peterson of Chugiak set the pace Saturday at the Palmer Invitational cross-country meet, featuring 37 schools from across Alaska.

Abramowicz won the boys 5-kilometer race by beating teammate Shane Fisher by 12 seconds. Peterson topped the girls 5K by beating West Valley’s Gloria Bailey and South’s Elliana Zock by about 8 seconds — Bailey edged Zock by .04 of a second to take second place.

Team titles went to the Grace Christian boys and the Juneau girls.

David Sliwinski’s third-place finish led the Grizzlies to a wide margin of victory over the boys teams from West and West Valley, which tied for second place.

Juneau edged South by eight points in the girls team standings, an effort led by Rayna Tuckwood’s seventh-place finish.

On Friday, several of the same teams competed in the ACS Class Challenge, a 3,000-meter race at Cheney Lake.

The top times came from ACS’s Preston Merchant, who beat Sliwinski by less than a second with a time of 9:54.8; and Kenai Central’s Jayna Boonstra (11:59.8).
