Alaska's Ostrander will make Olympic bid Sunday afternoon

Alaska's Allie Ostrander will make a run at an Olympic berth on Sunday afternoon.

Ostrander, 19, is the youngest runner among 16 who are vying for three Olympic berths in the women's 5,000 meters at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene, Oregon.

The final begins at 3:28 p.m. ADT.

Ostrander, a Kenai Central graduate who recently finished her freshman year at Boise State, posted the fourth-fastest qualifying time in Thursday's preliminaries at Hayward Field. She covered the distance in 15 minutes, 27.13 seconds.

Provided they have met the Olympic qualifying standard of 15:24, the top three finishers in Sunday's race will secure spots on the U.S. team headed to Brazil next month for the Summer Olympics.

Ostrander met that standard in January by running a 15:21 at an indoor meet at the University of Washington.
