Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar will take on the world in his next cross country race.
Dunbar captured sixth place Saturday at the USA Cross Country Championships in Bend, Oregon, a result that puts him on the six-man U.S. team for the World Championships next month in Uganda.
"UGANDA be kidding me..!!!" Dunbar tweeted after the race. "Thanks to everyone, been a journey, and we still here fighting.!!"
Dunbar, who went pro after an All-American college career at the University of Oregon, was part of a loaded field in the 10-kilometer race at Rivers Edge Golf Course.
Leonard Korir, a member of the U.S. Olympic team last summer in Rio de Janeiro, won in 30 minutes, 11.8 seconds.
Dunbar clocked 30:33.4 to hold off Mason Ferlic by four seconds. He was six seconds behind three-time national champion Chris Derrick, who placed fifth.
The World Championships are March 26 in Kampala, Uganda.
