UAA earns 2 more NCAA track qualifiers; Alaskans Ostrander, Registe shine

On a day when UAA runners racked two more qualifiers for the NCAA Division II nationals, Alaskans Allie Ostrander of Boise State and David Registe — the latter a Seawolves alumni representing Dominica — delivered strong performances in California.

Ostrander of Soldotna made her college debut Friday in the 1,500 meters and merely generated the third-best time in Boise State history with her time of 4 minutes, 18.19 seconds at the Mt. Sac Relays in Torrance, California. That marked Ostrander's second strong debut in two events this season — she recently clocked 9:55.61, the second-fastest time in Boise State history, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Ostrander last summer finished eighth in the 5,000 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials. In 2015, as a freshman at Boise State, she finished second in the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. She's a freshman in outdoor track because she red-shirted last season while injured.

Registe, a former Division II long jump champ for UAA, won his signature event in the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University in California, leaping 25 feet, 3.25 inches. Registe set the Cougar Stadium and Clay Invitational record in 2015 with his leap of 27-2.50.

UAA senior sprinter Jamie Ashcroft, a two-time All-America, clocked 11.89 in the 100 meters at the Clay Invitational to provisionally qualify for the NCAAs. Freshman Vanessa Aniteye's personal-best 55.76 in the 400 meters also registered as a provisional qualifier for nationals. And UAA's men's 4×400-meter team of Nicholas Taylor, Liam Lindsay, Darrion Gray and Adam Commandeur clocked 3:12.29, an improvement of .30 over their performance earlier this season to provisionally qualify.

UAA senior distance star Dominik Notz on Thursday night clocked a personal-best 29:12.23 in the 10,000 meters to automatically qualify for nationals. Notz, who also owns a provisional qualifier in the 5,000 meters, is a seven-time All-America.

The Seawolves have racked 16 national qualifying marks — two automatic qualifiers and 14 provisional qualifiers.
