Ski jumpers compete in New Year’s Classic for first time in 3 years

For the first time in three years, ski jumpers soared through the air in the New Year's Classic jumping competition Saturday at Hilltop Ski Area.

The largest ramp of the day — the 65-meter competition — was decided by the narrowest margin.

Nathan Shuttleworth edged Gus Compton by .20 points to win the 65-meter U16/U18 boys competition with 347.90 points.

Compton had the day's longest jump with his first effort, but he suffered a minor crash. Shuttleworth captured more style points on both jumps to earn the victory.

The largest victory came in the 40-meter U14 boys jumps, where Carter Brubaker won by more than 70 points.

The event, which was rained out the last couple of years, included jumpers in 11 classifications competing on ramps of 10, 20, 45 and 65 meters. Some jumpers also competed in nordic combined.

The New Year's Classic is an Alaska Ski Jumping Club event and is one of many U.S. Cup Junior Series points events across the country.
