Talkeetna's Oosik Classic attracts more than 600 skiers

A trio of high school skiers from Anchorage provided a dramatic finish Saturday at the Oosik Classic cross-country ski race in Talkeetna.

Eleven seconds separated Gus Schumacher, Andrew Hull and Zach Bassett in the men's 25-kilometer race, which drew 266 racers. Schumacher set the pace in 1 hour, 24 minutes, 24, with Hull following in 1:24:29 and Basset in 1:24:35.

A total of 662 racers completed either the 25K or the 50K. They were treated to a sunny day and views of Denali for the entire race.

Dylan Watts and Nichole Bathe won the 50K races.

Watts paced a field of 53 men, finishing in 2:22:40 to beat Galen Johnston (2:24:01) and Seiji Takagi (2:29:53).

Bathe, one of 13 women who raced 50K, triumphed by nearly 10 minutes in a time of 2:53:19. Shalane Frost was second in 3:04:58 and Nicole DeYong was third in 3:08:05.

Sadie Fox topped a field of 331 to win the women's 25K in 1:32:33, nearly nine minutes ahead of second-place Karina Packer, whose time of 1:43:20 edged Nancy Pease by one second.

The race was hosted by the Denali Ski Club.
