Alaska’s Ryan Stassel places 8th in the season’s first World Cup slopestyle competition

Ryan Stassel of Anchorage finished eighth in the first World Cup snowboard slopestyle competition of the season Friday in Laax, Switzerland.

His score of 56.13 ranked him fourth among Americans in the field of 58 competitors.

Stassel, a two-time Olympian, posted a qualifying score of 65.68 on Monday to finish fifth and advance to Wednesday’s semifinals, where he scored 74.71 points to move on to the 12-man finals.

Gold went to Canada’s Sebastian Toutant with 87.25 points. Red Gerard of Colorado, the reigning Olympic champion in slopestyle, was second with a score of 85.46 and Justus Henkes of California took bronze with a score of 82.33.

Julia Marino of Connecticut won the women’s competition with a score of 81.3.

In two big air competitions earlier this season, Stassel posted finishes of 13th place in Beijing and eighth in Atlanta.
