UAA women dominate Western Region alpine races at Alyeska by taking 10 of 12 podium spots

The UAA women’s alpine skiers competed on home snow for the first time this season Monday and Tuesday at Alyeska, and they hogged the podium both days.

Rebecca Fiegl, who earlier this month skied to NCAA All-America honors for the Seawolves, won both slalom races on Monday and one of two giant slalom races on Tuesday at the Western Region FIS Tech Series.

Teammate Li Djurestaal won Tuesday’s other GS, and was third in the other three races. UAA’s Nicole Mah added a pair of second-place finishes as the Seawolves claimed 10 of the 12 podium spots available.

Preventing a complete podium sweep by UAA was Randi Von Wichman, a U19 skier for the Alyeska Ski Club. She grabbed second place in Tuesday’s first giant slalom and skied to third place in the second.

Von Wichman and Saba Grossman of the Sun Valley Ski Team were Monday’s top junior-level skiers. Both posted fourth-place slalom finishes, with Grossman’s coming in the first race and Von Wichman’s coming in the second race.

The men take over the slopes Wednesday for a pair of giant slalom races. The first run of the first race is scheduled for 10:45 a.m.
