Hot then cold: Shooting woes doom UAA men’s basketball in loss to Northwest Nazarene

Two days after shooting their best game of the season, the UAA men's basketball team fell cold Saturday in a 71-67 loss to Northwest Nazarene.

UAA went from shooting 61.4 percent from the field in a win over Central Washington, to 32.8 percent in an upset loss to NNU in Nampa, Idaho.

UAA (5-3, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) tied the game 54-54 on a Suki Wiggs 3-pointer with 5:36 to go, but missed opportunities down the stretch doomed the Seawolves.

NNU (3-4, 1-1) scored the next six points and UAA couldn't capture enough offensive momentum in the game's waning moments.

The Seawolves got back within two points on a Wiggs jumper with 35 seconds remaining, but Diante Mitchell was called for a charge the next time down the court. NNU missed four free throws in the final 30 seconds, but made enough to keep its lead.

Mitchell led the Seawolves with 22 points and Wiggs delivered 20 one game after setting a program-record with 46 against Central Washington.

Corey Hammell grabbed 15 rebounds for the second straight game. He finished with six points.

Big-man Connor Devine went 0 of 6 from the field, but tallied nine rebounds.

NNU put together a balanced offensive attack led by Bouna N'Diaye and Pol Olivier with 13 points apiece and Kaileb Rodriguez and Jayden Bezzant each with 12.

The Seawolves get their first week off next week since starting the season with a pair of exhibition games in October. UAA's next game is Dec. 17 in the Alaska Airlines Center auxiliary gym against Trinity Western — a team from Langley, British Columbia, out of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association.
