Larkin, Ross, Alonso pace new-look UAA gymnasts in season-opener in Virginia

Nicole Larkin and Morgan Ross were each strong in three events and Tere Alonso tied for an individual victory in UAA's opening gymnastics meet Wednesday against William & Mary.

The Tribe defeated the Seawolves 191.325-188.950 in the dual meet in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Alonso, one of six freshman on UAA's team of 14, tied for first with William & Mary's Briana Gironda in the balance beam with a 9.700.

Larkin, a senior, and Ross, a junior, delivered UAA's most consistent showings, combining for six scores of 9.45 or better. Larkin, the squad's most experienced gymnast, had a team-best 9.625 on bars and a 9.575 on beam, while Ross, the team captain, was runner-up on floor exercise and scored 9.675 on the first beam routine of her career.

William & Mary (1-1) was led by a 38.700 all-around from Briana Gironda and a 38.550 from Olivia O'Connor as the Tribe raced to a 48.275-46.875 lead after the first rotation and pulled away.

Junior Madeleine Arbuckle was the lone all-arounder for UAA, earning 37.375 on her first career attempt at all four events.

"Our goal is always to break at least 190, so while I'm disappointed in the outcome, I'm pleased with our effort, and we know more now about what we need to improve," UAA coach Paul Stoklos said in a press release. "There were certainly some first-meet jitters. We'll regroup and aim for a much better performance Saturday."
