Flu-bitten Seawolves fall to Ferris State, 2-1

Illness kept two UAA hockey players off the ice and Ferris State kept the Seawolves out of the win column Friday night.

Ferris State topped UAA 2-1 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup in Big Rapids, Michigan.

The Seawolves — playing without leading goal-scorer Mason Mitchell and Alex Jacksted, who the school reported were out with flu symptoms — mustered only three shots on goal after the first period.

After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs (11-17-4, 10-12-3 WCHA) scored on a power-play in the opening minute of the second period, when Corey Mackin fired a shot through traffic past a screened Olivier Mantha in the UAA net.

Midway through the period, UAA (7-18-6, 6-13-6 WCHA) tied the game on a goal from Jarrett Brown, his fourth of the season. Assisting on the play were junior forwards Matt Anholt and Tad Kozun.

Ferris State's final goal came six minutes later when the Bulldogs' Trevor Recktenwald tapped in the game-winner.

Ferris State outshot UAA 39-11, including a 27-3 advantage in the final two periods, but Mantha kept UAA in the game. The senior goalie tallied 37 saves and stymied five Ferris State power plays.

The Seawolves struggled to generate scoring opportunities on the other end and went 0 of 8 on power plays.

UAA remains in last place with 26 points in the 10-team WCHA standings with three games remaining.

The Seawolves conclude their series with Ferris State on Saturday and round out the regular season next week at eighth-place UAF. UAA needs to finish in the top eight to earn a spot in the WCHA playoffs.
