West Region D-II hoops: Cal Baptist, Western Washington, Simon Fraser advance

Cal Baptist 85, Point Loma 79 (OT)

Cassidy Mihalko and and Kamille Diaz logged big minutes Friday and delivered big performances to spark second-seeded Cal Baptist to an 85-79 overtime defeat of seventh-seeded Point Loma in the NCAA Division II West Region women's basketball tournament.

Mihalko dropped a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds while playing 43 of 45 minutes at the Alaska Airlines Center. Diaz came up just shy of a triple double in 42 minutes — 18 points, 10 assists, nine rebound and three steals.

Tori Mitchell and Courtney Nelson each furnished Cal Baptist 12 points.

Point Loma trailed by eight points after three quarters before rallying to force extra time.

Roya Rustamzada played every minute for Point Loma and racked team highs of 21 points and 18 boards. Alex Brunk in 44 minutes fueled her club with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Kassidy Gengenbacher added 16 points, six rebounds and four steals in 41 minutes, and Sydney Tonack contributed 15 points and seven rebounds.

Simon Fraser 69, UC San Diego 65

Fifth-seeded Simon Fraser of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference committed a mere seven turnovers and shot nearly 50 percent from 3-point range to rack a 69-65 victory over fourth-seeded UC San Diego, 69-65.

The Clan drained 9 of 19 3-pointers for 47.4-percent shooting from distance.

Sophie Swant, who hit three 3-pointers, furnished Simon Fraser a game-high 17 points. Ellen Kett generated 14 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and four steals. Elisa Homer added 11 points.

Mikayla Williams paced UC San Diego with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Dalayna Sampton added 14 points. Beth Mournier and Joleen Yang each contributed six assists, with Mournier adding 11 points and Yang 10.

Western Washington 74, Cal State East Bay 48

The Vikings of the GNAC opened the game on a 9-0 run and used 50-percent shooting to easily dispatch Cal State East Bay, 74-48, in the opening game of the tournament.

Third-seeded Western Washington (26-5) used 18 points each from senior forward Tia Biggs and senior guard Taylor Peacocke to reach Saturday's semifinals against Cal Baptist. Kiana Gandy added 13 points for the Vikings, who held the Pioneers to 29.4-percent shooting and won the rebounding battle, 39-26.

Rachel Albert furnished the Vikings 10 rebounds and Biggs added six. Jessica Valley delivered a game-high nine assists, with just two turnovers.

Senior guard Shomari Harris led Cal State East Bay with a game-high 23 points, nearly half her team's total.
